Cervical spine surgery is offered to help alleviate pain and other symptoms related to a variety of cervical spine conditions. The most common conditions include cervical disc herniation, cervical spondylosis (arthritic changes), trauma, and tumors. Many conditions in the cervical spine can be treated without surgery, and for most patients a trial of conservative treatment is warranted.
Surgery can be performed from the front (anterior), or the back (posterior). A fusion may be performed as part of the surgery in order to stabilize the spine, although a specific recommendation for the type of surgery will be made based on your medical condition, the x-ray findings, and the specific condition that you have.
If a fusion is to be performed, external bracing (cervical collar) is rarely required.
